our approach

At Upendi, we believe meaningful outcomes are achieved through collaboration. We work closely with children, families, carers, teachers, GPs, and other key support networks in a flexible, child and family-centred way that is grounded in everyday life. We aim to create therapy experiences that reflect what truly matters most to your child and family.

Our initial assessment sessions are designed to get to know each person in their own context, exploring strengths, challenges, and daily routines. For children, we often use play-based assessment to observe functional skills in a natural way. From this session, we collaborate with families to identify priorities and goals, provide practical strategies or home activities, and discuss next steps in therapy or other supports as needed. A written report is not included, however, this can be requested as an additional service.

Initial Assessment

Upendi Therapy Services
Upendi Therapy Services

Upendi’s occupational therapists are trained to administer a range of standardised and informal assessments to support funding applications, diagnostic processes, and therapy planning. These may include assessments for sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, visual perception, or functional capacity. Standardised assessments may take up to three hours to complete and are accompanied by a detailed report and tailored recommendations.

Standardised Assessments

At Upendi, therapy sessions are tailored to support each child’s individual goals and progress at their own pace. A standard session includes 45 minutes of face-to-face time with your child’s occupational therapist, plus an additional 15 minutes for preparation and follow-up activities such as reviewing notes, selecting and setting up resources, documenting the session, and packing away.

Sessions may take place in your home, school, or community environment, depending on what best supports your child’s participation and engagement. For school-based sessions, we also allow travel time to and from the classroom to ensure your child receives focused, uninterrupted support. Following the initial assessment, session lengths and frequency may be adjusted to suit your child’s needs, routines, and progress, ensuring therapy remains meaningful, flexible, and effective.

Meetings and Collaboration

We understand that progress is best achieved when everyone is on the same page. Our therapists can attend meetings with GPs, schools, coordinators, and other key stakeholders either in person or via telehealth. This may include Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, case conferences, or transition planning discussions.

Reports and Documentation

Formal assessments completed by Upendi therapists are typically accompanied by a comprehensive written report. Progress reports are also provided for NDIS participants at the end of each plan cycle or as required. Upendi therapists can assist to provide letters to support funding requests and special provisions or adjustments within the school environment. They can also prepare therapy summaries or handover reports if you choose to transition to a new service provider, helping ensure your child’s progress and goals are clearly communicated. *Please note: Upendi does not provide reports for Family Court matters.
